On Saturday, June 8th, The National Association of University Women Plainfield-Brunswick Branch recently honored Neighborhood House for its landmark 82 years of service to children and families in Plainfield. Neighborhood House Executive Director Carol Presley accepted the award on behalf of the organization. The award was presented to her by former Neighborhood House Executive Director and NAUW member Evelyn Motley. We’re honored to have served Plainfield for over 80 years!
The Neighborhood House 80th Anniversary Gala was a tremendous success! On September 27th, we hosted a full house at the Plainfield Country Club and enjoyed an inspiring and enlightening keynote by MSNBC host Joy Reid. Thank you to all those who attended and supported the important work that we do. The gala raised funds for a building expansion, state-of-the-art classrooms, safety and security upgrades, and a technology center to ensure that the children are prepared to succeed in a technology-driven environment. Without your support, we could not educate and invest in the next generation.

On Thursday December 7th, our Executive Director, Carol Presley, was joined by Plainfield Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, Superintendent Dr. Caryn D. Cooper, and Dean of the Union County College Plainfield Campus Victoria Ukachukwu for a tour and holiday toy drive to commemorate the opening of our new site. The new center, located at 33 Westervelt Avenue in Plainfield, features 8 state-of-the-art preschool classrooms.
This location meets the increasing demand for affordable childcare by allowing us to accommodate 30 additional children raising Neighborhood House’s total enrollment to 320. We’re also thrilled to have provided 7 new employment opportunities for city residents. The new center features a recreation room for teacher trainings, meeting rooms, and an indoor play space. Each class has its own restroom and water fountain for the children.
On November 03, 2016, we hosted our second annual fundraising show, “Still I Rise: Conversations with Phenomenal Women,” at the historic, Tony Award winning Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This unique and inspiring show featured dramatic readings performed by some of New Jersey’s most influential and trailblazing women including Tara Dowdell, President of Tara Dowdell Group; Dr. Maris Lown, VP of Academic Affairs at Union County College; Dr. Margaret McMenamin, President of Union County College; Arlene Quinones Perez, President of the Hispanic Bar Association (NJ); Debra Tantleff, Founding Principal of TANTUM Real Estate; and Wincey Terry-Bryant, acclaimed jazz and gospel singer.
All of the proceeds from this fundraiser benefit our center expansion and renovation effort.
